Bringing positivity into 2021

Bringing positivity into 2021

With 2021 just around the corner, many of us wonder what the new year has in store. Considering everything 2020 brought us, is a new beginning simply wishful thinking? I don’t think so. To me, every day feels like a fresh start, as do Monday mornings and birthdays. But there’s just something special about a new year. All around the world, we experience a new beginning together. This collective feeling of rebirth makes the new year powerful, even during times when we feel powerless.

I have a special tradition for the holiday; I get burning paper and write 3-5 wishes for the new year. Then I write 3-5 things I want to leave behind. I burn them, releasing them into the universe. Sometimes we feel like we need permission to let go of things that are holding us back. The beginning of the year can feel like a fresh start, and when we start fresh, letting go becomes easier.

This year, I’m thinking a lot more about resolutions. I know we will continue to face challenges in 2021, so I’m making pointed, intentional goals such as getting outside every day. Another goal is to maintain long-distance relationships because connecting is so important right now. Like me, you may have reached out to friends or family who live far away with all of the virtual communication this year.

You can also make it your resolution to do things you’ve always wanted to do but never thought you’d have time to pursue. For example, maybe you’ve always wanted to write a book. For me, it’s fitness competitions. While I used to compete, lately I’ve spent most of my time teaching. Now, with extra wiggle room in my schedule, I’m making it my goal to return to this activity that I love.

When thinking about a new resolution or hoping for a better year, a positive attitude makes a huge difference. Our thoughts have power. Speaking to ourselves negatively can bring a negative outcome. If you want to achieve something but tell yourself it’s not realistic, you are less likely to reach that aspiration. Instead, remind yourself that you have the power to control your outlook and accomplish your goals. So, tell yourself that 2021 is going to be a better year. A positive mindset will help make this new year the new beginning we desire.
