Goodbye $5 Coffees — Sip This 5-Minute Choc-Espresso Smoothie Instead

 

Blended coffee drinks are downright delightful — they're cold, they're sweet, and they have caffeine. And, while we've already given you clever ways to order sugar-free coffee drinks at Starbucks and tips for making healthier versions of your favorite lattes, now it's time to tackle a better-for-you chocolate espresso smoothie.

When you order blended coffee drinks, they're often overly sweet and overpriced for what is essentially a caffeinated milkshake loaded with sugar. TBH, you can do so much better at home — and it's only going to take a few minutes.

You need zero barista skills to whip up this super-delicious plant-based chocolate espresso smoothie created by Chef and Food Stylist Megan Mitchell. She jazzed up all the ingredients for more flavor and more nutritional value with protein, fiber, healthy fats, and vitamins.

You'll get an all-important kick of caffeine to start your day or get ready for a workout, plus 25 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber.

 

Chocolate Espresso Smoothie Ingredients

You'll Need

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • ½ large banana, ripe
  • 1 scoop Plant-Based Nutrition Shake
  • 1 Tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 Tbsp. flax seeds
  • 1 tsp. espresso powder
  • 1 tsp. chia seeds
  • 1 tsp. cacao nibs (optional; for garnish)

We're using almond milk, which is one of our favorite healthy non-dairy milk options, and a cup of ice to achieve the perfect consistency. You'll also notice a lot of smoothie recipes include bananas. Bananas are a great smoothie base because they add a velvety texture, and you can use them to sweeten food instead of sugar.

To give our smoothie more nutrition, we've also included a scoop of Plant-Based Nutrition Shake.

Since edible seeds like chia and flax are bursting with nutrients, we've added those in as well.

For chocolate lovers, we're using cacao powder, which is less processed than cocoa powder. Raw cacao has high concentrations of antioxidants. Look for it at your local health-food store or online.

Of course there's coffee, which adds antioxidants and other benefits. Coffee can boost your energy level, improve your mood, and support brain health. We use espresso powder for a concentrated kick of coffee flavor!

Finally, if you're feeling fancy once you've blended up your smoothie, sprinkle on some cacao nibs as garnish. Think of them as natural chocolate sprinkles!

 

How to Make a Chocolate Espresso Smoothie

With 13 grams of fiber and 25 grams of protein, our chocolate espresso smoothie is the perfect nutritious pick-me-up for that mid-afternoon slump. It's sweet, caffeinated, and takes only 5 minutes to make!

Instructions

  1. Place almond milk, ice, banana, Openfit Plant-Based Nutrition Shake, cacao powder, flax seeds, espresso powder, and chia seeds in blender; cover. Blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into serving glass; garnish with cacao nibs, if desired. Enjoy!
