The Fear Factor: Learning How to Overcome Your Fear of Change

The Fear Factor: Learning How to Overcome Your Fear of Change

Change: it’s inevitable, and seemingly impossible to deal with.

Here are some tips to help you confront any fears about change in your ever-changing life.

Facing Our Fears

When it comes to embracing change, a lot of us are reluctant to do so. Whether it’s a big move, or a change of pace at work, we’re all affected by change. It’s time to face our fears, and unpack what we’re so afraid of.

The word ‘change’ is defined as, “to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone”. What we really fear is the unknown and the prospect that change might bring about some unintended consequences that could negatively affect our lives. Hence why the fear of change is so prevalent. So, what can we do about it?

As cliché as it may seem, learning how to accept change is an integral component of overcoming your fear of change. According to the Wall Street International Magazine, acceptance will allow you to welcome the change occurring in your life, without sacrificing your sense of self. Instead of resisting change, try to instead accept it as a positive necessity.

Don’t Wait, Communicate!

There’s no better way to cope with the trials of change than by seeking comfort in others. It’s no secret that in times of stress, we often isolate ourselves from family and friends. Communicating about your fear of change will not only help alleviate your worry, but will enable you to identify your fear and begin to work through it.

Whether you seek out a friend, or a loved one, it’s important to prioritize communication-and get talking! When you share details about your fears with other people, you may be surprised to find out that there are many others that share similar worries. The reminder that you are not alone can be very comforting!

Keeping Your Mind on Being Mindful

Practicing mindfulness meditation is also an effective tool to reduce your fear. A common meditation that the peaceful people over at mindful employ, is known as the “Touch and Let Go” technique. In short, this technique encourages you to “touch”, or embrace your fear in such a way that allows you to “let go” of it.

Finding the right meditation or self-care routine can really help you face your fears with a clear mind. There are specific meditations that will transform your fear of change into the freedom to recognize it. Also, the MYX home studio (launching November 2019) has a huge library of meditations, yoga, and other practices to help you gain control over your fears and live your best life.

Overcoming your fear of change will certainly take time to work through, but once you employ these practices, you’ll be able to tackle your worries head on!
